Gross profit vs net profit: what actually stays in your pocket.

Two profit numbers, one clear picture. Understand the difference in plain language and see how JotWiz keeps both updated automatically.

Every business owner has stared at a profit number and wondered: Is this what I actually made, or is there more math hiding behind it? The answer usually comes down to two figures: gross profit and net profit. They sound similar, but they tell very different stories.

Gross profit shows whether your product or service is profitable on its own. Net profit shows whether the whole business is profitable after every bill is paid. Knowing both is what separates a business that looks busy from one that is actually healthy.

The difference

Gross profit is about the product. Net profit is about the business.

Gross profit

Revenue minus the direct costs of producing or buying what you sell. Think raw materials, stock purchases, packaging, and delivery-in costs.

Formula: Sales − Cost of Goods Sold

Net profit

What is left after all operating expenses, taxes, interest, and overheads are paid. This is the money the business actually keeps.

Formula: Gross Profit − Operating Expenses − Tax − Interest
Worked example

A small business month in numbers

See how gross profit and net profit emerge from the same set of transactions.

Line itemAmount
SalesRs. 100,000
Cost of goods soldRs. 40,000
Gross profitRs. 60,000
Rent, salaries, marketing, utilitiesRs. 45,000
Tax and interestRs. 5,000
Net profitRs. 10,000

In this example, the business looks healthy on sales but high overheads leave only Rs. 10,000 as true net profit. That is why both numbers matter.

Why it matters

Watch the right margin at the right time

Gross profit warns you early about pricing or cost problems. Net profit tells you if the business can survive and grow.

Pricing power

If gross profit is shrinking, your product cost is rising or your price is too low. Fix this before it eats the whole business.

Overhead control

If gross profit is strong but net profit is weak, your rent, payroll, subscriptions, or marketing spend need attention.

Cash decisions

Net profit is what determines how much you can reinvest, pay yourself, or set aside for taxes and emergencies.
